French petrol stations you can pay in cash?

Hello - does anyone know if you can still pay at major petrol stations in France with cash (ie autoroutes or attached to supermarkets/hypermarkets?)

Many thanks

Rebecca

Only when they are open I guess.you'd be best to look at a particular route and check out which ones are on it. Supermarkets can be closed Sundays and Mondays in France

Yes the petrol stations aren't usually manned 24/7, but there is usually a pay booth during normal working hours where you can pay in cash. Outside hours it's usually card only.

Use supermarkets, they are much cheaper than normal petrol stations.

Don't know about Mondays, not in this area none of them are closed.
Lunchtimes, that can be quite another matter with the smaller ones.

If petrol stations are unmanned and card only you could always try asking someone to pay with their card and then you pay them cash.

That may require a certain knowledge of the French language, and a compliant helpful person.

Many years ago CB was the only accepted cards in a lot of these places.
  • Most cards can be accepted. I'd be more wary of toll booths. I went through 2 unmanned ones where the cash acceptor was out of action last week.

Which of course rules out most French

And don't stand there for 5 mins like my girlfriend trying to dump all her small coins in, THEY DON'T ACCEPT THEM (but she wouldn't be told).
