My local butchet is slightly more expensive than Tesco, but he can tell me where the meat came from. His excellent service and traceability far outweighs any price benefit that Tesco can give me.

If I were to be really pedantic, I would say that my "local" shop ie closest to the house is an incredibly posh deli and NOTHING is cheap. If I want to buy luxury food I would rather go to Borough Market and enjoy the day out.

The bigger picture is that I live near a shopping area that serves a large ethnic population (from all parts of the globe) and I can buy cheap spices, bombay mix etc. The grocers sell unusual vegetables I can't find in supermarket chains, I don't know if they are cheap because I have nothing to compare them with. Even when I move away from this area I might make the occasional shopping trip to stock up on exotic foods which are expensive or hard to find elsewhere.

    Hi All,

Our most local shop is Somerfield (just behind the house actually!), but the newsagents shop I work in which is further away (more local by definition) doesn't have many cheap products. That said, as there is a Co-Op just over the road from the newsagents, our boss intentionally priced his milk and bread just below the Co-Ops price!

Almost all of our sweets, crisps, cigarettes (not that I smoke btw), etc are all cheaper than the Co-Op too, which is incredible really, as I think some of the prices we charge are high! (although for any sweets/choc, I'd try to get a multipack at a supermarket that costs less - even the owners wife does this herself, as she gets her shopping, even crisps and biscuits, from Tesco!).

    Cheers

Our village shop is wonderfulBaconsthorpe, Norfolk).

They sell everything I could concievably need, from bread and milk, to locally produced yogs, meats, fresh and frozen from local butcher.

Flours from Letheringsett mill, sugars dried veggies/pulses.

    Cakes, biscs, crisps, sweets.

Pet foods, household stuffs, fuses, laces, picture hooks.

Dried herbs and spices - 50g for 65p, wonderful curry, garlic etc pastes. Coconut milk, creamed coconut, and other yummilicious ingredients.

fresh parmesan, buffalo mozzarella, oats mueslis fruits.

Fresh veg and fruit, which is reduced to half price if not perfect.

Also the range of Happy Shopper stuff.

Not to mention paper/mag delivery, grocery deliveries and Post Office.

I can't praise my village shop and it's friendly helpful staff enough. Boy are we lucky.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

Gravitytolls you are really lucky! I would love to have a shop like that close to me! My local is not particularly good or cheap but is there for an emergency I guess which is important.

All our veggies from the local shop are cheaper but the quality is a little poor sometimes, you have to go in on the day he goes to the wholesaler to get good stuff.

The local butcher is much cheaper for mince, it's £1.50 for 2lb and he makes it with stewing steak and not the rubbish as I've seen him mince it in front of me.

With the Co-op it all depends what's on BOGOF but they have some very good reductions if you time your visit right.
Organised people are just too lazy to look for things
