Brittania Life Assurance

Good morning people. A few months ago whilst researching through family photos i located an old life assurance certificate for my mother who passed away 8 years ago.
I understand that Brittania has been taken over in years gone by and is now under Phoenix Life.
I have been in touch with them and sent as much details as i can including copies of the certificate. After some considerable time they have written back to me saying they have no trace of the policy and that is the end of the matter.
Does anyone have any advice on where to go from here. I refuse to believe that i have reached the end of the line on this one?
Thank you muchly

If the policy had a value then the details would be retained. Once the policy ceases to exist e.g. matured, surrendered, lapsed or expired and any value paid out, then details would cease to be retained around 6+ years after the event.I refuse to believe that i have reached the end of the line on this one?
If you still believe it is active then show them the evidence of current payments being made.
The requirement to return policy documents has been gone for many decades. So, the policy may have matured, surrendered, lapsed or expired without that being handed back. You need a bit more than a policy document.
What type of life assurance was it?I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. Was the policy still active when she died?
I expect it lapsed/expired/matured a long long time ago, if so then it would be right they dont hold the details any more.0 -
All i have is a single rather old certificate. It has not sen the light of day for well over 35 years.
No proof of any payments is in existence, and no one is around with any knowledge of it.0 -
Britannia Life didn't exist 35 years ago. At that time it was still FS Assurance and wasn't taken over by Britannia Building Society until about 1989.
Are you sure you got the right insurer?
Britannic Assurance, a well-known industrial branch insurer was popular at that time.I am a mortgage broker. Sadly I was in Stoke in 1990 and ended up as a Britannia Life broker consultant covering Chester & North Wales.
I learned all about FS Assurance on my induction in Glasgow when FS/Brit Life was still on West George Street. Brit BS moved Brit Life HQ to a new building, Bothwell Court in 1990.
