Quick Question Re: Tax Credits

I used to work for the Tax Credits Helpline back in the day (2002 - 2005) but it's changed a lot since I left.

We didn't receive a renewal pack, so I phoned up and we've had one in the door. My wife's lost her P60 so we're waiting on her employer giving her a phone with her income details for the year, but on the renewal it now says:

"Income for 2013-2014 that your employer(s) or occupational pension provider(s) told us about. This is the information we held on 25/07/2014" and then it has our income.

Does this mean that her employer (and mine) have already told TC what her P60 income would be? We only received a small amount while our daughter was under 1 and are now due to receive a small amount again as we've now got 2 kids.

Thanks!

Your employer has to send data electronically to HMRC every time they pay you. This is called RTI (real time information).

Tax credit office are using the RTI tax data for tax credit purposes and that is the figure you can see on the award notice.

However, RTI income figures are not necessarily the correct income figures for tax credits. They don't take into account deductions you may be able to make such as periods of statutory maternity pay or mileage allowance, some pension contributions, gift aid etc....

Also, it has been known to be wrong, so you should double check with the P60.
