Surely I'm entitled to a refund/exchange?

Ok, so here's the story:

Last Monday I spent £44 in Sports Direct on the new Arsenal home kit for my partner(an avid arsenal fan)

Come Tuesday morning, he went to the iron the top(as he has done with his football shirts many times before) We checked the label, as it being a new sponsor and new shirt, thought there may be different care instructions, but it states on the label clearly you can iron inside out, as long as the lettering isn't touched- obviously.

So my partner turned the top inside out, put the iron on one of the lowest settings possible, a slight bit of steam escaped and it immediately burned a hole in the sleeve!

My partner then took the top back to the store, and experience the worst customer service imaginable, I won't go into that too much as we've got a complaint going through for that, comments were made about where he comes from etc etc.

Now after contacting head office, they've told us the too has to be "inspected by an area manager" so he took the top back to a different branch last Tuesday. Since then we've heard nothing. We were told this process takes a couple of days, it's been over a week now, we've been back into the shop as we've not heard anything, we were told this "area manager" would be in the shop on Monday and they would definitely call us. It's now Wednesday and still nothing. I also emailed through a complain as per their instructions about the way my partner was treated and still no acknowledgment of that apart from an auto email.

I'm quite concerned now as they have the shirt and my receipt. We were in possession of this top for about 12 hours literally. I'm £44 out of pocket and they don't honestly seem to give a stuff. My partner had to go to the Emirates Cup without his shirt at the weekend. I honestly wish I'd just paid more and gone to Arsenal Direct.

Am I entitled to a refund/exchange?

Any advice welcomed

Sounds like your iron might be faulty.....

Irons don't usually give out steam on the lowest setting. Steam by its nature is hot!!

You burned a shirt with your iron. Can't see Sports Direct doing anything at all really.

My son has 3 Arsenal shirts, i've never had to iron any of them, wash then hang to dry, they don't really crease. Maybe it's inferior quality from the genuine shirts ?
  • As I've said, it was on a low delicate setting, the same for silk? My partner is a 35 year old man he's been buying arsenal shirts all of his adult life , and has ironed his shirts hundreds of times. As have I in the past. We're not idiots, and are not going to set out to burn something that I've paid nearly £50 for the day before. Some people may have that sort of money to throw away, we don't.

Now as I've said the label on the new Puma shirt says it's fine to iron, there's no mention of temperatures either!

I've been onto them again this morning, the store number they have us was incorrect, the customer services tell us they can't tell us when the area manager will visit the store, so they've been on possession of the shirt for a lot longer than we have, and my partner has charity shield at the weekend.

    Feeling royally fed up!

Lol. Please don't patronise me. I've posted here because I've never dealt with such shocking service before, and I wanted advice.

If you like, I'll post a picture up of my iron working. If it was faulty, would my clothes, my kids clothes and the rest of my partners clothes not be damaged too? Oh yeah.

No need to be rude. The beauty of a forum is that you get a mixed bag of views, that won't always agree with you - that doesn't make the opposing views wrong.

Best thing you can do now is wait for SD to get back to you. I'm sure he can find something else to wear this weekend.
  • So why post here just to be sarcastic and not give any actual advice? Take your sarcasm elsewhere because it's not needed here.
  • Nor did I say the person was wrong.
  • The comment made by notanewuser is correct.
In general, steam irons don't produce steam when on the lowest setting so it is possible that your iron is faulty.

You can quite happily iron some materials at a higher temperature than recommended without causing any damage (cotton, denim etc), but this isn't always the case for nylon.rayon and other materials that can melt easily.
