Removal of default on credit account.

A few years ago I got into debt with Barclays. It took me a while to clear the debt and the bank to close the account with referral to a debt company to pay the money. I paided the owed £173 (I believe that's the value) and thought that was it.
Upon viewing my credit status online on 3 different companies it said my account with Barclays was default.

I went into Barclays and requested they checked the system for my payment. After a 40 minute hunt for account details and lots of phone calls. The staff member confirmed my payment had been received a long time ago and that the credit sites should not be showing default.

How can I remove this default from my account as it is affecting my credit.

Do I have to contact the credit companies directly or go via the bank contacting them as they said they sent information saying DNt was cleared a while ago and still no change.

Well, referral to a debt collector would normally be a clear indicator of a default to recorded, even if you paid it off soon after.

Not really clear if you paid in full before or after that happened?

If after, you may struggle to argue against it despite what you were told.

How long ago did you query the default?

Procedure would be to enter a dispute on the default status with the credit reference agencies that show it and also write/complain direct to the creditor outlining your dispute as well.

Then if you don't get anywhere after 8 weeks or so, you can take the matter to the financial ombudsman and Information Commissioner as a formal complaint and let them decide on your complaint with the bank.

Important thing is to make those formal complaints so you can take that next step if you get nowhere with the actual bank, and so they take proper notice and are less likely to just fob you off.
