Hi guys,
Got some really strange probs on my computer at the mo...
It was fine when I switched off Saturday night, but Sunday morning its all gone to pot.
Takes an eternity to start up... (running XP)
When I finally get logged in, my quick launch has dissappeared, nothing I open appears on the taskbar even when they are open, half of the things I try to open won't open but they do appear as a process in the task manager (e.g. I try to open the System Restore function from the start menu and rstrui.exe will appear as a process in the task manager but it won't actually open on my screen.
I managed to run an (last updated Saturday) AVG virus scan which picked nothing up at all. Also ran spybot which found one tracker cookie but nothing serious..
Finally, when I come to shut down it says "saving your settings" but then just stays there.....
Anyone experienced this or got any ideas how to fix?
Cheers
M

Try booting into safe mode (press F8 at startup) to check performance.
If you can login, you can run system restore from there.
Also try checking the hard drive from the command prompt: chkdsk /f/r

Thanks guys...
I can't seem to get my comp into safe mode... as soon as the black "Windows XP" screen comes up I press F8 but it just carries on as normal....
As I said above, Systemrestore doesn't work! I try to open it on the start menu and it shows up in the processes in task manager (rstrui.exe) but nothing comes up on the screen!

You have to press F8 before then - tap it a few times almost immediately after switching on. If you see the black screen with Windows XP logo it's too late and you have to shutdown/restart and start again.I can't seem to get my comp into safe mode... as soon as the black "Windows XP" screen comes up I press F8 but it just carries on as normal....0 -
There is also a problem with the Windows Update facility as mentioned below:
