Roof layer under slate tiles

Hi,

My house has a roof with slate tiles. Under the tiles, there seems to be a white layer of about 2 inches that you can see from the sides.

Does it have a specific name?

(it is beginning to crack and come off from the sides and i want to claim on my NHBC warranty)

Thank you

Mike

Around here it's just referred to as the cement board at the eaves - any builder will understand what you mean by that.

It's installed to give a nice straight line and a gap enable the edges to be mortared securely into place. It allows the water to drip clear of the wall as it overhangs by about 50 mm.

It used to be cement asbestos board but is now obviously a substitute, depends on age.

Under cloaking to give it it's full title

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Thanks. What is the potential consequence of that mortar layer coming off? In some of the houses in the neighbourhood there are chunks falling off. Mine just has cracks and a couple of gaps,

Can it cause water leaks inside?

Unlikely and it's not unusual, ours is the same.

It may allow some damp to enter the outer skin of the wall and allow salting lathes to rot if left.
Also allows the edge slates to flap around more in stormy weather.

Minor safety issue with chunks falling off so yes, it needs doing at some point, basically when you can a afford it. :money:

Well, all neighbours have claimed under the NHBC warranty, which was deemed to be valid and i can see Taylor Wimpey people scaffolding a different house every day, so i'm hoping they can fix it

It's not difficult, they will sort it. It lasts maybe 20 years before eroding away.

PS, forgot to mention if the gap is large, the starlings will get in.;)
