Argos - don't buy a TV from them!

I bought a 42" Bush tv from Argos in December. It has just stopped working - no power. After a 40 minute phone run around I found that they use an outside service (UMC) for this product. UMC asked how I wanted to proceed - writing/email etc. I chose email. They told me I would have to send a copy of the receipt and package the TV for courier collection. Luckily I had the box (how could anyone do this without the original packaging?), albeit in a poor state as it was in the cellar.
I emailed them with my information. They replied to ask me for my information.... Plus the model/serial on the back of the TV. I sent them the information - again- and said I had packed the TV. They said the model number would be ok, so I sent it. I then received another email with 2 labels - one to go on the back of the TV, inside the box!
After the set broke down I did some surfing and found I had made 2 mistakes. Firstly, buying Bush and secondly, buying it from Argos.
I would have been happy to put the TV in the car to take it back to Argos for replacement, refund or even a credit note (could have put it to a proper TV then).

Not taking away from your experience, but my Bush LCD TV is 7 years old and still working flawlessly. I actually wish it would stop working - it's the only way the missus will let me upgrade (I know, not very MSE).
Wonder what would have happened if you did just take it back to the store?0 -
That's standard practise to try to repair the TV before replacing or refunding it. Argos were ok when my TV was playing up. I took it store to get it sent off, then after a while (can't remember how long) they refunded me and I brought a new TV. PC World/Currys have a similar procedure, especially if you've had the TV over 6 months.0

As Bush is a budget brand, it could well end up being uneconomical to repair so you may get a replacement, or even a refund.0

I dont think its a reason to not buy a telly from there no matter how poor you think the service is.

Bush do seem to get a bad name, whether it's justified i don't know.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

#1: UMC are the manufacturer. Bush is a brand label slapped on by Argos.
#2: Your contract is with ArghOs. I'd be surprised if the hoops you're having to jump through would pass muster at your local trading standards office.0
