Planning trip to New York in 2015

Hello. I may be getting ahead of myself but I am taking myself and my daughter to New York next year, preferably July or August.

My question is is there any specific dates that I should look to include or avoid due certain events being on or does it not really matter.

Thanks in advance.

Avoid June-September, extremely hot and sticky.

Is your daughter a 'city person' ? If not, you may not get the positive experience that you're looking for.

To be honest I am not sure whether she is or isn't. We have just come back from London which she seemed to have enjoyed, although I would imagine New York being busier (although I may be wrong.)

She really just wants to see America and I have always fancied going to New York (I've been to the south west before) so seemed a good idea, although since I am still very much in the conceptual stage, I'm open to other ideas.

Flights are usually cheaper between October and April. Booking flight and hotel together via your preferred airline can save a large amount (but not always).

if it helps at all, my 7 & 10 year old both really liked/enjoyed Boston & Washington DC, but didn't really like NY. They much preferred looking at it from the NJ side of the river, rather than being 'in it'.

Parts of NYC are very busy, yes - esp specific attractions and certain districts but overall, its nowhere like as trying as London for a visitor - If you can avoid using the Metro during the peak morning and evening periods, you will go a long way to avoid much of the crush.

I actually really enjoyed walking through large parts of the city and much of it was not nearly as busy as I'd expected. :)

I have been in June a few times and in August last year, it was hot and sticky in August and busy, June was much more bearable. I took my 10 year daughter last year and I think she was bored with most of it, the only time she was happy was when we were in central park eating ice cream! I would recommend going in June, there is a thread on here about New York which is worth look

July is the most popular time for tourists. It's hot, humid and crowded but all those people can't be wrong.....

They are. May and October are much nicer months to visit.

Presumably you're considering July and August because your daughter is in school. Although I haven't been myself at that time of year I can imagine it could be pretty unbearable. I'd suggest that the October holiday might be a better time to go, and if your area's holiday dates are earlier than English half term the cost of flights might not be too bad.

I went for two weeks in July a few years ago with my daughter. It was hot, but not unpleasant. Sun cream and a hat weather. Don't fall asleep on the beach at Coney Island for two hours at lunch time though. That was nearly bad.
