I have noticed a default from BT on my credit file from 2012 - I have no record of the account nor did I ever receive a default notice, I have asked them for a copy of the notice and they have said they don't keep records for more than 2 years so cant issue me with one. Can I do anything??

Have they provided you with evidence of the debt / account at all?
If they cannot prove the existence of the account/debt or that you are liable then you should be able to get the entry removed from your credit file.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Well this was on the chat service they have, they said the account did exist and has been passed to a debt collection agency, however I did not receive a default notice - they've said they cannot provide this0

You really need to be dealing with this is writing to have a record of the information you asked for.
I would write them a letter stating that you have noticed an entry on your credit file in their name. State that you have no knowledge of any account with them or any outstanding balance and ask them to send you proof of the alleged debt or to remove their entry from your credit report.
As a service agreement they don't actually have to send out a formal notice of intention to file a default.
In instances where a lender is required to send out such as notice they don't actually have to keep a copy of it, only a record of the date it was sent.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Follow Tixy's advise best contacting them in writing.
Not sending a default letter is the least of your worries if you have never had a BT service. All that glitters is not gold.0
