How much deposit did you pay and when?
What what your deposit for exactly, given that you hadn't booked a specific date?
Did you try ringing the venue? Have you actually asked them for your deposit back?

i paid £500 last year when we went to view as we had a date but i fell pregnant and had to move wedding to 2015 they said that is fine no problem but it would cost us a extra £1000 we said fine as we really liked it there, the lady we dealt with has now left.
I have left messages and emails but no answer back to me i have asked for it back but yet again no answer i dont know what to do its alot of money to lose, but now it is looking like we will have to get married in may 2016 because the venue didnt get back to us about a date to book the church, The venue then said if it is in 2016 then it will a extra £2000 on top of the £4000 they already want but they didnt get back to me so it isnt my fault is it?0 -
Check if they are in breach of their terms and conditions, which aim guessing they are and use that against them0

How long between you contacting them and them getting back to you?
Did they manage to rebook your original date? You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
If there was no specific date booked then I cannot see a reason for them withholding your deposit.Thinking critically since 1996....0

There was a specific date booked originally (see post 3)One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.0

Hello
I've got a bit of experience in this type of thing as I'm a wedding planner/event manager. Would you mind if I ask a few questions?
How did you pay the deposits?
You've paid £1500 total? When?
When was last WRITTEN contact from them?
What does your contract state about change of dates and about cancellations?
Who said it would be find to change the date?
How many emails have you sent / and were they to a particular person or generic address?
How long did you leave it between emails?
Do not pay an extra £2000 at this stage.
