Buying first car immediately after house completion date: addresses?
Options
Hi all,
I should complete my house purchase on the 15th and I'll be looking to buy a car immediately after that (I will need that plus it would be good to have a car while I move - I have 2 weeks overlap still living in the property I'm renting now). I'm going to a dealer to get a used car, and I guess I'll need my driving licence when I'm there - altough I'd like to register the car at my new address, which will be different from the one I have on my licence (of course I will change the address ASAP, but for sure I won't have my licence with the new address the day after I complete).
I was thinking of:
- Change address online on my licence on the day of completion
- Go to the dealer during the weekend, get the car, register it at the new address (but that will be different from the one printed on my licence).
- Send back the licence, after taking a photocopy (I know in this country I can still drive even I don't carry my licence with me).
Do you see any problems with that? Sorry if this sounds like a very basic question, but I never owned a car in this country (although I drive every now and then rentals), so I don't want to make any mistakes - acts that are against the law.
Thanks!

As you have overlap would it not be simpler to just do the address change for both licence and log book after you've moved. That way if you wanted the car earlier for any pre move running about you'd have it.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
MSE Florida wedding .....no problem0 -
Are you paying for the car with cash or dealer finance?
KYC checks will require you bring proof of ID and proof of address, so unless you already have council tax bills or utility bills to your new address then the finance will probably have to be in your old address and the dealership may not be willing to register the car in a different address to the finance.
If you are a cash buyer then the KYC checks may go away (cannot remember what happened to me when I last paid cash for a car as Ive slept since then0 -
Do you really need to be buying a car when you are taking on the other biggest debt in your life!
For practicality, if you really need it and your going to finance it, your address history at present will be valuable. A new mortgagee at a new address isn't as strong (I know, counter intuitive as the finance house will have already vetted you); so buy it now and make aware after the successful move all that need to know about the address change.
Money laundering for a cash purchase is strictly about cash above £9k (15,000 euro really) and recent banking charges mean that most bona fide traders don't want it - the bank will charge for counting and checking it.
Good luck with the move and buy a £1k Vectra 1.8 petrol instead.0 -
Thanks all - I guess it's easier then to have it on my current address and change it after I don't live anymore in my old place.
P.S. Appreciate also the suggestion about buying after getting a mortgage... although I'm in a lucky situation and the car is already budgeted for - going to buy cash and not spending more than £3k0 -
If you're not getting the car on finance there's absolutely no issue whatsoever. The dealer will only need to see identification for a finance deal (he'll copy it and who knows whether he may then lose it!). He won't need to see your driving licence in particular (although I did see somewhere that you might need identification for a brand new car - something to do with the number plate? Over the top requirement, but there you go).
Your car registration documents and driving licence details are not linked in the UK. At least, not yet. DO NOT ENTER YOUR DRIVING LICENCE NUMBER OR YOUR DoB ON THE REGISTRATION DOCUMENT. There's no obligation to do so.
I suggest you register the car using your new address, and change your driving licence details when you move in. No need to complicate anything here.
Oh, and I wouldn't bother with all that online malarkey to update your driving licence. To do so you need to register a government gateway ID, or whatever the hell they call it. This involves linking all sorts of personal data, with the consequent risk of identity theft and snooping. Do it by post.0 -
