New job - want me to get a charge card?

I have just been offered a position at Pricewaterhouse Coopers, at interview I was never asked about financial history etc. I resigned from old job and got contract through today. It is mainly fine, altho did ahve to point out I had to make compromise payments to criedtors through CCCS, I have several defaults but been paying back for over a year (altho credit check shows only the defaults and not the fact ive been paying), anyway it also says I need a charge card for expenses with american express, how do I get one if i ahve a poor credit rating? I dont want to lose this job, it is my dream job. I only just managed to get a 32% capitalone card recently.

Any ideas? will they just give me on as its a coporate card? it is in my name still and does mention they will credit check me?

  • have you had a formal offer of employment letter, or a verbal commitment. If you have received the letter does it say somewhere "subject to satisfactory background / reference / id checks" etc?

I would be very surprised if you gained employment in a regulated industry without a crecit check. But lets assume that somehow you did, perhaps based on the fact that you have informed them about re-payment arrangements, and have the job offer, in that case, ask PWC if they can provide a corporate card for your use. If not, can they provide a letter of recommendation to Amex. It might help.
  • hi,

I had a similar experience. In my last job I needed to have a corporate credit card, I spoke in confidence to the HR dept and they said that the card was registered to the company and not me, I would only be a named user. There were no credit checks on me as I have checked my records with credit reference agencies.

I hope this helps and congrats on your new job!

  • Hi

    Thank you everyone for replying.

I have just read what I wrote and the spelling is awful so I apologise (very tired and worried at time). Anyway fortunately I spoke to them and they said I dont need to use their card so I am going to use my capital one card for the moment.

The only thing I am worried about now is that I had to fill in a questionaire and it asked wether I have made compromise agreements with creditors, obviously I put yes. I wrote on the back and gave details that I make regular monthly payments through the CCCS. Do you think this will be a problem? according to HR someone from compliance will call me and ask for more information? It is really frustrating that something I did at 18 could affect my future now at 23.

    Anyway thank you again.

PS. I apologise for grammar and spelling, I am just writing as I speak.

I think you are worrying too much.

Mistakes you made a few years ago are not likely to affect your employer.
In fact an enlightened employer will not want to employ someone who has never made any serious mistakes !!

When I've had one of these cards before it's been a joint one with the company so I wouldn't have thought it would be an issue.

    Whatever you do be honest.

Employers really don't mind people who've made mistakes (in fact as I've said it could be regarded as character building).
However they do object to being lied to, so jsut be honest and up front and stop worrying.
  • Charge card will be registered to the company and not in your name so there :p be happy and stop gambling ;)
  • I've emailed them directly with an explanation so hopefully now I can get a definite answer.

Thank you everyone, I do tend to worry and haven't had alot of sleep recently but hopefully everything will be fine. If not there is always the casino ... number 26 is definitely going to come in this time lol.

No seriously I have stopped gambling, paying of debts... just really frustrating as it doesn't even feel like it was me doing all that stuff 4 years ago.

    Thank you everyone
