Delayed flights

Hi there
I need some help in regards to a delayed flight I took to Las Vegas in 2011 with United airlines. The flight was delayed until the following day, however due to the plane needing a new part we had no idea when we would fly. We eventually flew with delta airlines to New York and then on to Las Vegas.
We missed a day of our 5 days holiday, however my concern is I did not book the flight it was booked by a friend who I am no longer in contact with. I tried calling united airlines at the time as my friend was advised all of those who went on the trip had to do this individually but to no avail.
Can I claim for the delayed flight, I don't have booking details or boarding past due to time ago it was and bring booked by a friend.
Thanks any help appreciated.
Nicola
