Updates that wouldn't install...now laptop jammed!

Last night when turning off my laptop, a message came up saying that updates were ready to be installed and not to turn off the computer. After waiting for half an hour it still said 'installing update 1 of 3'... so I left the laptop running and went to bed.

This morning, sure enough, the laptop was turned off and I thought everything was fine.

However this evening, the laptop takes an eternity to load windows..and then just jams. The mouse pointer still works but I can't click on anything. The only way I can turn the laptop off is via the on/off button. On restart, exactly the same sequence occurs.

Have I been zapped by Windows updates?

Try booting into safe mode and see what happens.

Rebooted in safe mode as suggested, and did system restore to 2 days previous. All 'ok' now.

Seems that the last batch of Windows Updates included a dodgy one which fouled up computers all round the globe, judging by comments on the Windows Update newsgroup forum.

Have now turned off Automatic Updates until a patch has been released.

I got the PC slow-down after downloading the new update for the Malicious Software Removal Tool recently.
Later on my PC took aeons to shut down and also to start up again (the next day)....so I did what you did - system restore and have refused the download when it tried again.

    Blasted M$oft  !
