I am particularly dismayed to learn that a virulent new strain of boomer has been discovered.

Irrelevant because mystic_trev also quoted his post 2 mins after I did, obviously I was alerting him to how bad his post came across (sometimes people do things rashly but don't mean to be so insulting)

He's a strange one. He boasts about organising his pay in such a way to minimise tax, admits that this stopped him being able to afford much in the way of a house, and then boasts about how much his house is "making".

He really doesn't seem to understand finance at all, yet belittles others who've been far more sensible financially than he.

I'd not be surprised to find he lives with his parents...

Why not delete the whole thread and give us all a break?

    Not a bad idea.

I have thought for some time that something is not quite right.

You need to read the 'Roger the Lodger' thread, then draw your own conclusions! ;)

Chances are people in their 50s will still be working and I had a lot more disposable income in my 50s that I did in my 40s kids starting work made a big difference as did mortgage paid off .

Money is only half the equation to leisure spending.

Time is the other half. With retirement ages pushing back and more people having mortgages until later life ( buying later , paying off later, having kids later, contributing more to kids university spends etc) I'm not sure leisure spend budget will remain as high. But we can hope, because it would be good if it does. :)

    Boomers are great

It's the UK government that is the problem. I hope this coming general election includes pledges to fix the broken housing market.... and pledges to reverse the current governments promotion of pensioners investing in property.

Rather then inflate the housing market to socially devisive levels, the government needs to create policies and schemes to give boomers no other option than to invest in sustainable business growth and job creation.

Stop this crazy short term'ism and short sighted vote winning.

.... to all boomers.... please support the country that gave you the opportunity to make you as wealthy as you are.... please do not now suck it dry of the little life it has remaining.... leave the economy in a state where there is something left for your grand daughters and sons.
    Peace.

How many pensioners will invest in property I think that is complete red herring. Don't be fooled into thinking all boomers are wealthy. If you are hoping for a pledge to as you call it fix broken housing market I wouldn't hold your breath. As for suck it dry what are you talking about.
  • I don't have a problem with boomers wealthy or not.... the problem is residential property is seen as a good investment by anybody, because it is. I would much prefer the investments to go into more constructive and sustainable ends.... maybe government bonds specifically channeled to go into new business development, training and apprenticeships?

There must be something the government can set up to stop profiteering from a scarce resource? Especially when it is a resource that is very socially devisive.

Sucking dry... that is when properties are snapped up by buy to let merchants who out bid people who want to buy and occupy. The buy to let merchants are stopping a generation from getting on the ladder and making each mthly payment go towards a future where they can own outright... Rather than hand their very own future prosperity to the buy to letters mth by mth.

I have nothing against buy to letters... I have a big problem with the laws and regulations put in place by government that support and promote this activity without controls.
    Peace.
