Child missed off final award notice

Hi
Please can anyone offer any advice, I have just received my final award notice for 13/14 and my son hasn't been taken into account.
He was born in February 14 and I contacted HMRC to claim child benefit in March. In May, I received my tax credit renewal and he wasn't on there so I called up to let them know he had been missed off and also queried why this had happened to which they were apologetic and stated he be added on to the renewal.
Today received the final award and he isn't on the claim, I called and they said because he wasn't added until May he isn't part of the claim for that year, they only back date one month.
I am cross because nowhere does it state that you need to inform child benefit and tax credits on the birth of a child separately, and I had no idea otherwise I would have done this. I find it ridiculous that they hold all this information (I provided his birth certificate etc) but they can't seem to put two and two together.
Has anyone else had this trouble? What can I do? I feel like I am being penalised for not being given the correct information, even the child benefit guide doesn't say you need to also inform the tax credit people too.
Thanks for listening to my rant x
