  • It would be better if you lived with people who also aren't students so you can share council tax. £160 a month is a lot for one person to pay

I'm not sure it's your liability..

According to this the council tax is the responsibility of your landlord even though he is a student.

I can't really move out as I have no money to put a deposit down anywhere. I've tried talking to him and saying we could split it 50-50. £80 is much more affordable. But he won't have any of it. He won't be a student come September but I'm not sure when CT kicks in, he doesn't graduate until November.

Why not? Resits? Make sure he's telling the truth about the late graduation, but once he's finished he needs to split it 50/50

Why are you paying the council tax? You are not liable.

Who is receiving the council tax bill? You or your landlord?

Your landlord is liable. He can ask for you to pay an increase in rent to cover some of the council tax that he is liable for but he cannot make you pay it.

    Speak to the council now.

Stop paying it and speak to the council if necessary.

Can't you find a room in a flat with someone else. Your not responsible for the council tax and hon putting up your rent by £160 a month isn't very fair how much do you pay niw

As a lodger you are NOT liable for council tax at all, it is landlord's responsibility, not yours - regardless of you working/not working/being on benefits - you are a LODGER

Go to CAB, seek legal advise - you are renting a room in his flat/house (so a lodger, not a tenant etc). He can say whatever he wants but CT is HIS responsibility.

Depending on your local councils policies your l/l might yet find himself called in for an interview or even charged a penalty.
