Diesel Drivers to be taxed more?

Potential for diesels to be taxed more due to their dirtier emissions resulting in high pollution levels in UK cities and the country being fined for breaching EU safe air health levels.

Any thoughts - something I've been expecting for a while and one of the reasons I've stuck with Petrol cars.

    Something has to change soon with VED banding - the annual VED for the average new car in the UK must be far, far lower than it was five years ago, which is only going to pull the total income to the exchequer down.

    VED as it stands makes little sense anyway.

    Fuel Tax revenue is well down too. Cars are a lot more economical than they were 5-10 years ago.

    I am sure they'll use this as an excuse to increase VED.

    "betrayed and misled" into buying diesel :rotfl:


    "They" caught me in 1993, when I bought a diesel 4wd.
    At the time, diesel was cheaper than petrol at the pumps.

    Lasted about a year before "They" noticed the surge in diesel sales and increased the tax on diesel to make it more expensive than petrol.

    "They" have to finance their 11% payrise somehow, and it is us that have to pay it. :cool:
    I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

    (except air quality and Medical Science ;))

    That's the fair way of doing it though.

    They will always find a way to move the goalposts to ensure the revenue comes rolling in.When electric cars are finally sorted and battery power is much better theres bound to be a new tax on them also.I believe if a car could be made to run on water they would make a law saying the water had to have a government approved dye in it and of course be sold at the pumps only......

    I have recently swapped from a 1.2 petrol to a 1.4 diesel (Both VW Polo, same year).


    My MPG have increased from about 35-40 in the petrol to 55-62 in the diesel - so great savings - and I live in NI and work near the border - so my car will always be filled on fuel purchased over the border. Diesal in Ireland cost me £1.14, whereas in my local fuel station in NI it is £1.34!


    Wish I had swapped to a diesel sooner!
