Good European city breaks

I’ve got a week off work in three weeks and fancy a quick city break somewhere in Europe, probably for three nights.

I don’t really want to go to one of the main European cities or countries (ie Paris, Rome, Barcelona, etc) and just want somewhere with a bit of history, culture or some interesting architecture or museums and decent places to eat and drink! I’m erring towards the eastern Europe area and cities like Prague, Tallinn, Ljubljana, Dubrovnik, Krakow, etc.

Does anyone have any suggestions or cities they visited and liked?

Prague and Krakow are ok atmospherically but not great on the museums front imho. Tallin's ok but a bit small. Budapest not bad, Try Bilbao, Girona, Figueres/Cadaques if you like Dali, Bordeaux, Gothenburg, Stockholm, Oslo, Helsinki, Hamburg, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Zurich, Copenhagen. Look at where you can get the cheapest flights to, or if by rail Lille/Brussels/Bruges

You might consider Sevilla.

And I found Praha stunning: far more interesting and beautiful than Budapest. But then, I loved Barcelona...

Seville's excellent and if it's galleries you want Madrid's fantastic (personally I enjoyed the Thyssen-Bornemisza rather than the Prado).


I really enjoyed Verona. Plenty to see and do there and a short train ride to Vicenza (home of Palladio) or Lake Garda.


Or the Rijksmuseum has recently reopened in Amsterdam....

I love Budapest. Lots to see and the wonderful thermal baths.

Dubrovnik is one place we were very disappointed with. Very small and crammed.

i have call to go to gothenburg quite often and the only thing good about it is the nils ericson train station so you can get outta gothenburg and go somewhere much nicer.

stockholm is lovely but everything is soooooo expensive.

malmo is nice and you can get a bus over to copenhagen too, so you can do a twin city break.

Brussells is really nice, easy to get to. You even have time to take in Bruges and Ghent at the same time as they are quite close. Brussells has lots of nice squares, lots of cobbled streets. Ghent has a lovely canal so you can take in a boat trip too.

I've done Prague and Krakow in the last year. Both are ideal for 3 nights. There is probably more to see and do in Prague and it's prettier but Krakow is cheaper, smaller and easier to get around.
