Self Employed Confusion: Help Needed Please!

Hello everybody,

Firstly let me apologise for the stupidity that you are about to read about. I have no idea about tax, self employment related stuff...as you are about to see.

Basically, to cut a long story short I started to film and edit some of my friends weddings a few years ago. I have never made a profit from this and only ever charged my friends if I incurred any costs. I was young and worried that I could be breaking the law by having this income as well as a full time job so I completed a questionnaire on the DWP website about being self employed.

I thought nothing more of this, and have ceased filming weddings and still have my full time job.

However I received a letter last year telling me I had to complete a tax return, so I called up the. DWP to explain that I am not self employed and I must have made a mistake.

The lady I spoke to was very rude and almost aggressive with me, she explained that I must fill out a tax return or I would owe lots of money in fines.

So I did this, and submitted it last year. I felt forced to do this even though I do not think that I am self employed and do not have a business.

Now I feel that I may be on the wrong tax code due to this mistake and I am too frightened to call them and ask for support due to the grilling that they have me last time.

Does anyone have any advice for me? Other than to stop being stupid and to not fill out online forms willy nilly?

Thanks for reading this far, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Much love,

G x
