IS + Carers

Morning,

I have no knowledge on this area and just trying to help a couple who live near to me. They are both 20, and have a 3 year old. The fella been claiming JSA for a fair while, plus HB/CB/CTC/CTB. His Dad is unwell and has been awarded HRC, so he's just claimed carers allowance, and has been told to put in a claim for income support too. The carers has now been confirmed and he's signed off JSA, but they're not sure how much IS they will be entitled to?

They think they'll get the carers (around £60 a week?) plus IS couples rate (around £112 a week?), but I wasn't sure if the two are just added together like that?

Any help welcome :)

The carer's allowance is counted as income in the award for Income Support and is deducted from the IS. But a carer's premium is then added on.

So they will get CA, IS minus the CA plus a carer's premium.

Thanks for that. I had an inkling that it wouldn't be as straightforward as adding them both together. I'll let them know x
