Hi
my other half and I have just bought our first house, and have no idea about the energy side of things! We took a meter reading the day we got the keys and the house is supplied by eon for gas and electric. I searched online and started the switching process to First Utility, but we haven't phoned Eon at all yet. Do we call them and give them meter readings or will First Utility do that when we give them a reading? Do we give First Utility the meter reading we got when we got the keys or the one from today?
Or do we call Eon, give them an up to date reading, pay them the bill then give First Utility the next reading?
Any help is much appreciated - as you can probably tell I literally have no idea!

The gaining company - First Utility in your case - arrange the switch including passing E-On your meter readings at the actual time of switching.
That is the theory anyway, but as you might discover if you do some research on MSE, and elsewhere on the Web, First Utility administration seems to be flawed.
I would however ensure that E-on are aware of the meter readings when you moved in - or you might find yourself paying for some of the previous occupants bill.0 -
Thanks for replying, Eon sent a letter to call them or they will send out a bill within 4 weeks guessing our electricity use, do I need to call them or not?0

No need to call them about switching, but you need to call them with your details and meter readings when taking over the house.
As soon as they are contacted by First Utility they will doubtless contact you to try and persuade you to change your mind0 -
You need to register with the existing suppliers on day one and give opening readings. Eon will block any attempt to switch unless you already have an account with them. So do this now while you are still in the cooling-off period, assuming it's been less than 14 days.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Damn it's more than that as we got the keys on the 11th of July! I wish I'd asked before now, I thought First Utility sorted it out. Now Eon are closed cos it's a sunday argh0

If you 'phone or receive calls from either Energy Company remember to record the date time and name of person you spoke to, with the gist of the conversation, and what ( if anything) was agreed. It can get very confusing after a bit, so you need to know you are on top of it. Good luck.:j0 -

The incoming supplier can't switch you from an account you don't have. You'll possibly have to start again and cancel the FU sign up. Reg tomorrow with Eon.
However FU are so chaotic that you may find they've not yet applied to Eon to take over the supply anyway.
I hope you took opening readings on 11/7, or you'll be potentially paying for someone else's usage. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Macman definitley have the readings from the day we got the keys so we know from where we have used, just not 100% on which reading we should give them! Do we give them two, one from the day we got the keys and one from today or just the old one?0
-
You give them the reads from day one, because that's the day your liability starts. You will be asked for a closing read nearer to your switch date.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Hi GalaxyStar,
Congratulations on buying your first home, I’m a new home owner and understand it can get a little confusing but don’t worry it does get a little easier.:o
I know you’re leaving us, I thought I would let you know what to do when you move in to a house and when you change suppliers.
Once you move in you’ll need to call your current supplier of your property, they’ll open an account in your name from the date you moved in and to the meter readings you give.
It’s your choice if you want to change to a different supplier, once you’ve chosen your supplier they’ll take all your information and after 14days they’ll start the transfer.
Your supplier will ask for a set of meter readings, to open your account to and they’ll send them to your old supplier, which they’ll use those to close your account and send you a final bill, once the bill has been paid your account will be closed down.
If you don’t want to phone us, you can do all of this through our website.
If you have any other questions just let me know, good luck in your new home.
