question r.e british gas

hi everyone wondering if someone can help me.

me and my partner are moving into a new house and have been told by the landlady we need to ring british gas to get a meter installed.

will we have to pay for this to be installed and will we have to be a customer with them once it is.

we are currently with edf energy and want to stay with them when we move.

Surely if gas is supplied to the property there is already a meter there? If there is no supply yet, then I think it would be your landlady who should arrange for it to be connected, not you as a tenant, but maybe others will know for sure whether this is the case.
  • hi thanks for replying.

i think once the previous tenants moved out british gas removed it. the letting agents who were dealing with the property had rang the landlady up about it and she said that we as tenants have to ring them as they wont fit one til someone is moving in. once thats fitted she can then send the gasman out to do a gas check so we can move in properly.

we were given a sheet of paper with numbers to call to find out the gas and elec suppliers were. if we have to go with the companys that the house is with how do i switch to edf energy. never had to deal with things like this before lol cant you tell.

British Gas do not usually remove meters when people move out of properties. The only exceptions would be if someone spefically requested it, if the property was to be vacant for an extended period of time, or if there were arrears and they got a warrant to remove it.

The first step is to check with Xoserve (Transco) if there is a registered supplier to the property. If there has been no meter for several months BG will often have released the supply. If this is the case, there is no reason why EDF can't fit a meter for you.

If BG still do have ownership of the supply, or if they don't but you choose BG as your supplier, then usually they will fit a new meter free of charge
