Whats it really like in Wellingborough ?

Hello everyone,
My wife and I bought a house and are completing in two days receiving the keys on the same day. It's near Finedon Industrial estate, about 5 minute walk from there and a 10 minute walk to the train station.
We've just moved from Australia because of all the crime there, every day there will be "Outlaw bikie gang shootings" or "Drug deal gone wrong" and every weekend it'll be "Robbery, armed robbery, One hit Knockout death & Fighting".
My son(22 years old) went to prison in Australia for a couple years and we moved here from all the trouble. So I am hoping that Wellingborough isn't that bad because he has anger issues and I want to know where to let him know not to go !
He wouldn't start a fight, but he sure as hell wouldn't back down from one. So I bloody hope to god that there isn't that many trouble makers in the area.
Just generally wanting to know what its like there, crime, people, jobs, shops, pubs etc.
Any info from someone who lives there/near by will help !
Thanks a lot!

Wellingborough hasn't got the best reputation, as any large town, it will have it's better parts and worse parts, but in general, Northampton is kept in higher regard. Large plans to completely redevelop the town center in Northampton are also slowly getting underway, which should make it quite a big shopping center, if you can't be bothered to make the trip to Milton Keynes. Northampton itself does also have it's rougher areas though, so I'll hardly tout it's perfect.
Looked at a few houses in Wellingborough last year, can't say I was taken in by the town, but you do get more house for your money.0 -
Why didn't you just move to a better part of Australia instead of an unknown area on the other side of the world.
As for your son, I predict he will end up in prison here too. Wherever he goes, unless he sorts his issues out, he will find people that will take delight in pushing his buttons.
All the crimes you ran away from in Australia are just as prevalent in the UK too.0 -

We moved to Australia 16 years ago. Figured out after 2 - 3 years that it was crap. Good for a holiday and crap to live.
I'm not talking about Australia as a crime infested place I'm talking about all the areas I lived in/considered over there was completely rubbish and full of crime.
Generally I know the UK has its bad parts like every country in the world. However my question was pointed towards Wellingborough itself. Sure there will be bad areas but it would be nice to know if there are any really bad areas where they are, so we can avoid it.
As for my son, He completed 13 months of Rehab life training once he left prison. So generally his fine now and hasn't had any issues for about two years now.
In what I said, I meant that if there was a group/certain people who would want to take the !!!! out of him, he wouldn't back down. Which of course is an issue that we are working on together as a family. But as everyone else, you can only take so much !!!! from people/a group of people before you crack it.0 -
I'm calling the T word.
Can you really believe that anyone would move half way round the world rather than just move to a new area locally, and then buy a house without doing any research into crime in the area first when that appears to be a key factor? No, me neither.0 -

I don't know whereabouts you lived in Australia but I used to live in Merrylands, Sydney. No problems whatsoever and, had circumstances been different, I would still be there today.
Many of the people who want out of this cesspit the UK has become look to Australia and, whilst it is too late for me personally, I am drumming into my kids to learn a trade and get over there and leave this mess behind.
What specifically was 'crap' about Australia, in your opinion?0 -

Are all the people on these forums this rude ?
Seriously, if you have nothing to contribute to the topic I created then don't.
Every person has their own different ways of dealing with things.
I chose to purchase a house in my price range closest to where we wanted to go(Because its too expensive where we want to go) and because we got a really nice house that suited our needs.
Can I not ask for other peoples view on the area I'm moving to without someone like you deciding to post something completely irrelevant and useless on this thread?
You have your own say, you do your own thing and handle things in your own way. I so happened to not ask about crime straight away because it wasn't a priority.
The point of posting this thread was to get general views from people who have heard of, or lived near/in Wellingborough.
Not for someone to post about what I should of done before I purchased the house.usefulmale wrote: »I don't know whereabouts you lived in Australia but I used to live in Merrylands, Sydney. No problems whatsoever and, had circumstances been different, I would still be there today.

We move to Australia in 1998. We first live in a very nice place. Belfield, it was nice then but oh has so much changed since then.
in 2003 we moved to Campsie, which was a decent area, we stayed there till 2006 when all the robberys and "Youth Gangs" came around. My son was only about 15 at the time and he was robbed after school around the corner from our house 3 times in a span of 1 year.
Mind you that was in late 2006.
We then moved to Bankstown in early 2007.
The area was fine, where we lived there was little to no crime at all.
My son finished year 12 in 2009 at Punchbowl boys high school, where he met a lot of troubled friends.
2 months after completing school my son went to prison.
In 2010 our car got stolen, and 2 months later someone had broke into our home and held us at knife point for cash, which we didn't have so they decided to take all the "expensive stuff".
We moved from there to Marrickville in late 2010.
from 2010 - 2013 my wife had been robbed 2 times at Marrickville station, my car broken into once. Someone tried to break into our house, but failed.
About mid 2013 was when all the problems came into play, we had a few shootings/stabbings 2 blocks away from us, lots of fighting on weekends, mind you nothing directly happened to us but it came to the point that it would be normal to hear a gun shot every other day, or hear on the news about a fight, or death.
It came to the point where waiting for our son to be released and my wife would be scared to even get off the train at any of the stations near our home. I had retired and had to ultimately drive to the city every night to pick her up.
We decided to find somewhere else to live.
In our budget, we couldn't move anywhere that was "nice".
We did find a place in Richmond, which had a really low crime rate from what we had heard, but the place quickly sold and we decided that Australia was not for us anymore.
Generally, I didn't like Australia. My son has no family over there other than my wife and I.
Over in the UK we have a vast amount of family, which is one of the main factors moving over here.
My brother spent half his life in prison and now works for a community youth outreach company. To stop Teens "Going down the path to prison" which is another reason why I thought it would be good to introduce my son to his uncle he never met.
Anyways, thats the areas that we stayed in.0 -
You're completing in two days time and are asking for advice now... isn't it a little pointless? If people say "No, Wellingborough is awful, terrible crime etc." are you going to pull out? Unlikely.0

It's curiosity.
I wouldn't pull out even if it was weeks away.
I just want to know what peoples views are on the area.
It could also help me get a general idea of what we're looking at when we do move there.
Our house is in the open, easily can be broken in to. If I do find out that the specific place we're living in is bad, then I'll get security installations done.0 -
You say you have lots of extended family here why have they not helped you find out about the area you intend to live in?
You could have easily googled local community groups/churches e.t.c and contacted them to give you a feel of what the area is like.
Also Police UK will tell you what crimes there have been in the area.
I would have also asked a member of your family to drop by and speak to the neighbours.
I'm afraid there are problems everywhere and with the best will in the world you could be lucky and then a few months down the line things could change.
Good Luck and welcome back home.0 -
It's a dump,0
