How much to pay parents for looking after kids

Options
I have been unemployed for a while and have just got a temp job through an agency which is full time (9-5, Mon-Fri). Obviously now it's the school holidays, my parents are having the kids. They will be going there in the morning and coming back after tea.

I want to pay my Mom some money for having them (cost of food etc) and obviously I want to give my Dad some petrol money as he will be driving them back and forth (it's approx 3.5 miles) each way.

What do you think would be a reasonable amount to give my Mom for looking after them?

There are 2 children aged 10 & 12.

    Hello,

I am currently paying £20 per day with £2 extra for dinner for my son at his Nursery. They run a school scheme of 9am to 3pm for the holidays. Normally I pay £40 with £2 extra for dinner from 8am till 4:30pm. Sorry for the rambling - am dozing off to sleep I think!

    Will they accept anything?
I paid my mil for looking after our children whilst I was at work but only after me telling her if she did not take something I would not be bringing them to her house.
We just worked out a monthly amount and I gave her the same amount regardless of how many days that month she had them due to school holidays, me being off or such things.
She wouldn't take anything when she looked after her other grandchild as it was temporary. But they ended up paying for her to have a weekend away.
Have a chat with her, see if she has any thoughts and go from there.

It costs me to look after my two grandsons. We ate in the USA now, end of July flights were horrendous. I'm glad to see them and help out, though.

Wish we were neater for regular help.

I'd ask first, but if they say they don't want any money, I'd probably insist on £40 a week simply to cover the additional costs of feeding them and running them around.

We look after our grand children a lot, and don't get or expect a penny. We love every minute of it.

I think the OP is to be commended for wanting to ensure the grandparents aren't out of pocket. Too many parents seem to take grandparents child are for granted. I also think there is a difference between caring so the parent can work so it is a regular and inflexible arrangement and babysitting so the parents can go out .

    Thanks.

I mentioned it on Friday when they were dropped back, (I've only been working for 2 days which was last Thurs & Fri) and she said she would leave it up to me.

I would look at a tenner a day to cover food and then taking them out etc. If they think that's too much then I would give a fiver a day and save the otheer fiver and then in September send them both of for a weekend to 'recuperate' .

I would at least want to cover petrol and food as I wouldn't want them out of pocket for helping me out.

It must have been rather expensive to take them to the USA to eat....
I think there's something wrong with your keyboard (not taking the mikey, couldn't make sense of your post until I realised that a couple of r's have become t's). :)
