Changing a barrel door lock
I got a new door handle from a scrap yard today VW polo W reg
I still got a working barrel on the old door handle (what's left of the old door handle)
I got no key for the scrapyard handle
So I have to swap the barrels.
I got the barrel out of the old one ok...but I had to use the key to unlock it to get it out.
The new one has no key, and all the locked teeth in the barrel are stopping me from getting it out.
QU. Do I have to drill out the non working barrel as the only way I will get it out?
Cheers.

Unless you wiggle the pins enough to pull it out yeah you may need to break the key part to get it out.
With the clirclip or whatever on the back removed you maybe able to knock it out with a drift.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

That'll just mash the handle. You have to remove the barrel by drilling carefully, without touching the outside.0 -
The way it is designed, it won't be knocked out, unless knocking it out bends all the pins and forces it out but I very much doubt that will happen before the whole handle fractures into bits and then I will have another broken handle.0

If you have it in front of you, and you cant see how it falls apart, you need someone to swap over the internals for you.0

I see how it comes apart. I got the barrel out of my old one. I've come to the conclusion that on the new one (with no key) there is no way it can be done without drilling it.
I'm looking for confirmation from someone who has done this before and had to come to the same conclusion.. either that or be able to pick the lock which I can't do.0 -
The job's as good as done, I drilled it from the keyhole end. Drilled off the shoulder of the lock and it then was able to be pushed out the other side. New (old) barrel is now in and working fine. I also gave it a spray of paint and lacquer and it is looking rather good for £10.
Now only has to be fitted back in the door and we're finished.0 -
I have never changed a lock because it must be quite tricky and need a lot of hard work. So i prefer to hire a professional locksmith to do this very work.0
