Hi all,

I have been given a Sony STR-KSL5 Sound System, which I am attempting to connect my Toshiba Smart HD TV.

At the back of my TV, I have red/white connectors for audio settings and red/blue/yellow connectors for other settings. At the back of the sound system, I have red/yellow/blue connectors for TV/Sat, VCR (NOTE : I have 2 sets of connectors for this) and DVD.

I have the following cables :

1. 1 black-to-black cable, which I assume is for the sub-woofer.
2. 1 red/white-to-red/white cable.
3. 1 red/white/yellow-to-red/white/yellow cable.
4. 1 orange-to-orange cable, which I haven't connected up to anything.

For my TV, I have a HDMI connection to my Sky Box and a Scart connection to my DVD/VCR player/recorder (just recorder for my VCR). Nothing else is connected.

I am attemptiing to connect my TV to the audio settings on my sound system but I can't get it working. For info, I haven't connected the orange leads to anything. I have also not connected my DVD/VCR to my sound system.

Anyone have any ideas what I am doing wrong ?

For info, I haven't been given any user guides or manuals to help.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

The system appears to have 1 x digital optical input and 1 x digital coaxial input , , have you checked whether or not the TV has any digital outputs ?.......you didn't quote the TV model number !

As you have the cable [2. 1 red/white-to-red/white cable.] I'd try connecting the Red/White audio line-out from TV to the Red/White sockets on the TV input of the Sony STR-KSL5

You may need to use the set-up menus of the TV to flip from internal speakers to sound-system.

If you can get the basic stereo working, then connect the TV to the digital-in with an S/PDIF optical cable which will allow surround sound (Dolby 5.1).

NB Do you know the Sony STR-KSL5 actually works, it must be around 10 years old? Just saying!

Tried this but still won't work.

Good question. I got it from a friend, who has advised me that it did work when he used it.

Having now checked the Samsung support website I can see there is indeed an optical output on the TV.

So connect an optical cable from the TV to the sound system.

As already explained, depending on the TV , you sometimes have to enter the TV menus and switch the sound to external.

Wouldn't that be lovely? Yes, do get an optical digital cable and connect that from TV to sound system. Problem with many TVs (dont' know about this one specifically) is that they'll only put out 2.1 sound at best, even if they're being fed 5.1 they'll downmix it.
If you've got a Sky box, PVR, Blu Ray player, you should be connecting them directly to the sound system, rather than through the TV.

You may also want to check the specs of the TV's as alot of them will only send the audio from the built in tuner and not from other devices that are plugged in.

when using a home cinema style amps, its best to plug in you devices directly into the sound system rather than the TV.

If both the amp and tv support ARC, then audio can be sent back and forth via the HDMI cable
