MATTRESS TOPPER - can anyone advise please?

Hi there
I have a sofa bed (for occasional use) which is fine apart from the fact that the mattress is not particularly comfy. I think a mattress topper would make a big difference but I'm not sure which type to buy.
a) the foam kind - which looks like a mattress but can be rolled up
b) the ones that look like a thick duvet cover

Does anyone have either of these & can you advise if they're any use please.

Many thanks :)

  • I got in a 30mm memory foam one, I ended up hating it, the stuff was far too warm and I felt like I was being drawn into a swamp. So my advice is if you go down the memory foam route watch out for the overkill, more aint necessarily better when it comes to comfort

I have an Ikea sofa bed with a top of the range mattress on it, but I put a quilted type of mattress topper on it, the kind with elastic straps on each corner. It makes the top a little softer and works as a protector, its machine washable and I can still get the fitted cover over the sofa bed so it stays on all the time.

If you got a really thick one you would have to store it and put it on every time you had guests, which might be a bit of a faff? Well, it would be for me as I don't have a huge amount of storage space!

I have slept on the memory foam style and did not like them as they made me sweat. I do have the feather ones on all our beds, cheaper ones from house of Fraser on the spare room beds and people who sleep on them say they are comfortable and as they are feather, they would store down very well.
  • I agree with other posters - the memory foam ones are too hot and to soft for me. They are also very bulky to store.

You'd probably be far better off getting a decent mattress in the first place.

Almost impossible to get a really good mattress on a sofa bed - always a compromise. I have a thin foam topper and don't find any of the problems mentioned!

+1 to this type here, I grabbed two of these quilted / padded / machine washable ones (also from ikea for around £9 for a 'double' sized one) on a standard mattress they are very comfortably -both personal opinion and complements I've received from people staying in my spare/guest room.
  • I bought one of those roll-up foam ones and it stank to high heaven of nasty chemicals.

I kept it unrolled and airing for a good 24 hours at least before trying to use it and it still stank.

Highly unpleasant and I had a distinct feeling that the chemicals being outgassed by that could be rather hazardous to health as well.

I took it back to the shop for a refund. They were initially reluctant until I pointed out, perfectly accurately, that those chemicals might damage my health if I used the product and I didn't have to spell it out any further as to the consequences for them in that case.

I got my refund at that point and bought a feather one and that has been lovely and comfortable and no smell.
