I have used a Ford Escape on several trips to the US and got over 32 US MPG
The Escape has now changed shape and looks like the European Ford Kuga so I would expect it to get even better MPG.
I never leave the crown jewels in the back so a luggage cover is not an issue to me.
I echo the go to Walmart comment ,get a cheap cooler $5 and some ice and buy water sodas etc. I once broke down in the desert (Toyota) and the cool water was a life saver while waiting hours for a tow truck.

    2 good points.
You can still see the luggage in the backs of the SUVs in the ones I have had, but maybe it doesnt really matter, I guess most people are not going to steal a few suitcases

It only really came to light for us when we were going to JFK from New Jersey (driving through Manhattan ).
I'd loaded the boot up with Miss Kittens bright pink wheelie at the back, with her travel bear looking out of the back window for a bit of fun :D -- but the window was so blacked out, noone could see it !

I've never been to Yosemite, so I wouldn't know how many SUV's there are in that part of the world, but in New England, they seemed to outnumber 'conventional' cars at times, which makes me think that a lack of luggage cover isn't an issue to our American cousins.

    Hi there,

We are going to the USA on our honeymoon in just over a week and we have most things booked and sorted now but wondered if anyone could help with a few quick questions.

    • What should we do about using our mobile phones out there? We have researched the costs and it is not worth using them on our current contracts. Should we buy a sim card to use within the USA then a phone card for phoning home - to use from pay phones etc?! We will need to have a phone with us as we are doing a fly drive and also need to call ahead to come places etc.

For calling home...Which network are you on? O2 have an app called TuGo which I use to text and call over wifi whilst abroad. I just did a big road trip and found wifi absolutely everywhere!

I really don't understand the modern obsession with calling home every day while on holiday (especially on honeymoon!), but as you say there is free wi-fi everywhere so you can use Skype, Viber or your own network's app (Virgin Media's is called Smart Call)

    I agree.

My mum used to ask me to ring her to let her know we'd arrived safely until I pointed out than a passenger airliner plunging into the Atlantic Ocean would probably make the news long before my missed phone call would alert her to a problem :rotfl:
