laptop shutting down for no reason

Can anyone please help? I'd be on my laptop for no more than 10 minutes and then for no apparent reason it shuts down with no warning. Anyone know why or have any advice?

thanks

    Is it the battery?

Mine only runs on mains now even though the battery appears to be charged.

How old is the laptop? My bothers laptop started doing a similar thing a while back, fans were getting clogged with dust and was causing overheating, may be a possibility.

dam* it - just happened again!

Tried the resore but it wouldn't work for some reason :-( The next button wouldn't do anything.

I think the heating may be an isue as it does get very hot. Any recomendations to get rid of the dust? I don't even know where the fans are. Teh lappy is only 8 months old tho!
    Thanks guys

Was about to suggest overheating myself. Strange as I was reading up about this tonight just out of curiosity. What laptop make/model is it?

Also, I had a toshiba that had this problem. the laptop would work for about 20 mins and then shut down. I could get it working again by leaving it powered off for a few minutes, although sometimes I would have to put it in the freezer - not that this actually fixed the problem.

Turned out it was a hairline crack on the motherboard, the laptop heating up to a point when on would cause the crack to break the circuitry.

But try cooling it down first. Sometimes taking it outside or pointing a desk fan at it can be enough to cool it a few degrees.

Make sure power cables are not blocing the vents, and that you're not blocking the intakes with blankets, clothes, etc.

Sorry for spelling, my speech program just packed in.
