battery chargers

Hope this in appropriate forum..

Have a very old battery charger which I use to charge a car 12volt battery as a spare. Charger has option of 12v,6v. Also now have a 9V caravan battery (55), which has leads fixed on and small circular contacts. When needed I use the 12 v battery to back up 9V one, with lead adapters.

Can I use the old charger to charge the 9V battery ? what setting.
Or could someone recommend a new charger that will do both(multi adapters)-been on ebay-loads-but which one.

Thanks

Charge the 9v battery on the 6v setting, will work but take longer than a 9v charger.

No, you should never user a 12v charger on a 9v battery.
Many of the new chargers will do 6v or 12v batteries, not 9v.

Also not sure how a 6v charger is going to charge a 9v battery (as above)........ Current will always flow to the lower voltage source.

Are you sure your battery is supposed to be 9v??? It seems such a weird voltage and unsurprisingly my Google searches for "9v caravan battery" bring up nothing but some PP3s, PP9s and this thread.

You can get 9v55AH batteries, they are available from equestrian suppliers- for electric fences, I don't think that they are rechargeable though

I would double check the 9v one, I agree with Strider, I've not heard of a 9v caravan battery.

As to the original question, any of the electronically controlled multistage chargers would do, you can leave them switched on for ever to keep the battery fully charged: I have one connected to The Other Car right now, as it can stand idle for weeks at a time, and the alarm drains the battery in a month or so.

thanks, it is a 9v daguet 140mj 9v impact SB55, 55 ah battery- looks like it was originally a farm battery ???. it has two 6 inch leads from terminals with holes for jack plugs(sorry if wrong terminology-do you know what I mean)
Thanks- should I use 6v charger-or is this no good ?

Caravan leisure batteries are 12volts not 9 volts.

Is the battery dead and only showing 9volts? Or is the battery from something else?

A 6volt charger wont charge it. You risk damaging the charger also. The 12v setting will charge it but you risk boiling the battery dry as it tries to force 12 volts through it.

Realise now that someone has adapted the caravan to incorporate this 9v battery - think its best to just use my 12v battery, as it can easily be charged. So sorry to be a pain- can I convert the 12v car battery into a 9v battery(same as one above) by buying an in line converter- ant thoughs?

No, 6v charger is not good and you should also never connect a 12v battery to a 9v battery.

The circuit will try to equalise to 10.5v per battery, this will damage the 12v battery and overcharge the 9v battery (which can be really hazardous).

    How has it been adapted?

Clearly electronics isn't your strong point.
If the voltage put out by the charger is lower than the battery voltage, no current will flow. The charger will likely be OK though, as they usually have diodes for this eventuality.

If you google 9v sb55 battery, you get several hits, but they are all non-rechargeable batteries (for electric fences)
Outside my experience, but I suppose no reason not to have a 9v rechargeable battery, but it won't be a lead/acid type.

What does the battery do in the caravan?

I'd get the wiring/installation checked out to see if it is just a conventional 12V system, then use it with a 12V leisure battery if it is.

Certainly isn't my strong point but I've charged 6v r/c car batterys using a 4.8 volt charger & it works every time.

Maybe the 9v-6v differential is too great but I'd try it & see.
