Even the MSE staff don't get this, as, in the newsletter before the current one, one of them was moaning about having to pay for a landline they don't use.

Two things here - no physical line to your home, no BB. Simple physics. Except Virgin Media who charge you more for that privilege anyway. As would ADSL service providers if they offered such a scheme.

The UK supplies some of the cheapest phone & BB in Europe. IIRC the UK was in the lower mid table re price and in the top 3 re speed.

    How many use a land-line?
Every single one that has either ADSL or FTTC broadband.

This is such a common complaint that I don't doubt at some point a broadband only option will be offered. I also don't doubt that it won't end up being any cheaper.

With VM cable no phone line is needed. If you take the phone line you get a BB discount. If you don't the BB ends up costing pretty much the same as BB + Phone would have done.
  • you don't need line rental if you use satellite broadband... but you would be cheaper to just bite the built and pay line rental.

Who pays for the undersea trunk, the satellite link, the UK backbone? Line Rental is just what they call it.
They can call it standing charge just to make you happy, but you still have to pay for it.

How would you like a UK ONLY internet? Whenever you want to go further afield, a pop-up says, "You haven't paid for access to this region." But you get to pay £2 less.

If you are a really low usage user, you can tether your computer to you mobile phone, and just pay for the data that you use. No line rental.

This is like objecting to paying for road tax because you've already paid for your car-the roads don't get built and maintained for free.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Broadband without line rental via satellite (for an average package, up-to 15mbps via avon) costs £139.99 (one off cost) and £74.95 (monthly fee) OR (£514.95 (one off cost) and £59.95 per month.

Line rental doesn't look too bad anymore does it?!

I'm with BT, 12months into 18month contract, all perks now ended, so now pay £15.99 broadband & £15.99 land-line, for which I don't use ever.

    Anyone in the know?

You need to renew your BB contract to get your discounts back. Just select the cancellations option and you'll be put through to the retentions team. They have all the discount power (front line staff do not).

I wonder if the MSE person who commented in the last newsletter has read this thread. ;)
