UK's biggest con

To get broadband, you must have an land-line.

I'm with BT, 12months into 18month contract, all perks now ended, so now pay £15.99 broadband & £15.99 land-line, for which I don't use ever.

Biggest con out there in UK, surely the day must be near that we no longer have to have a land-line in order to have broadband.

Anyone in the know, or perhaps it something we could start a petition to change.

if you did not have to pay for a line they would just bump up the fee for broadband. There is a charge for repairs and maintenance of the path to your house

look at yearly up front payment for line rental to reduce or swap to Plunet or another provider at the end on contract....best deals are always for new customers

You need a line to use the BB.
    Where is the con?
  • Is this something different to what you signed up to?

Have you called them to talk about it? see if they can offer you something better? You could pay the land-line upfront to save some money on their line rental saver.

ok, maybe not con, but rip off UK as per, how many households would not have a land-line these day? How many use a land-line?

You don't, get a 3G data sim and a router that you can attach it to then you don't need a landline.

Alternatively, if you want your broadband to come down a telephone line then you need to pay to rent that line. The line rental goes to the maintenance of the infrastructure, not to the ability to make telephone calls. VM claim to have a broadband only product, but if you look into the pricing it's quite a lot more expensive that the difference between "phone only" and "broadband plus phone", so they are doing the same thing.

OFCOM set the wholesale price of line rental that BT can charge at a level that reflects the infrastructure maintenance cost (around £9/month from memory).

BT's min line rental is now £15.99 or 12months up front £159.99 - so 2months free.

Alternatively, use virgin. They have FTTC and coaxial to the premises so make no use of the BT phone network.

But, as said above, you still have to take the phone line and if you don't, the charge is actually more!
