I have 4 usb ports. Device manager say's there all working but only my mouse works in one particular port, which one I don't know.
I know I have one usb 2, thanks to this forum but I've no idea which ones work & which ones don't.

Advice would be appreciated

I think the only way to test them is to plug your mouse into each port and see which work for you.

Should Device Manager say all the usb's are working when some are not.

device manager only tells you the status of the port on the board and the driver, not if what ever is connected to it works, you may find that the cables from the back of the port f it is a case mounted one are not connected to anything.

Sorry to be dim but do you mean they might not be connected to anything INSIDE the case.

It's possible depending on where they are. If they're at the back with lots of other ports then they're the ones physically integrated into the motherboard, but if they're at the front of the case or on the top then it is perfectly possible they have been plugged into the motherboard. Easy to remedy if there are spare USB pins on the motherboard. Just physically plug them in.

  • USB ports can be on the motherboard itself or as a PCI.
  • The USB on the black area is on the motherboard and the monitor connections (====) if their is USB there it will be PCI.

They look as though there the ones in the picture above. I do know that next to the usb ports is a socket where my LAN cable goes. If I open the case up will it show where the usb ports are on the motherboard
  • Yeah thats correct Renee. Try upgrading the drives that will help.

I've got to go & pick up Grandson from nursery but after I give him back I'll take the side of the tower & have a look.

Thanks everyone. I'll probably come back to you
