Marks & Spencer UNLIMITED Home & Contents Insurance with sports cover away from home

Firstly ... i dont work for them & have no ties to them (apart from my policy) ... I havent claimed from them yet (touch wood 8.gif ) so cant comment on the claims procedure ... & i am definately no expert, but on the face of it .... it looks pretty good 20.gif

Since tackleguard (specialist fishing tackle insurance company) ceased trading i have done a fair bit of homework trying to find a policy that covers or covers most scenarios of my fishing tackle. Most will cover this stuff but all seem to have scenaios when not covered (ie night fishing, in a car etc)

I ended up going with Mark & Spencer Insurance as it "seems" the simplest policy i found.

It is combined with my home contents insurance & the first thing i noticed ... is you do not have to place a limit on your insurance as the policy states the following

"With Marks & Spencer you get unlimited cover for buildings and contents (money limit up to £500) and generous liability limits which mean you are never knowingly under insured."
"You don't have the hassle of estimating rebuilding costs, or what it would cost you to replace your belongings. All we ask is that you let us know about any item, set or collection that is worth £4,000 or more. It's as easy as that."

"Your contents are covered on a new for old basis, and there's no excess to pay unless you choose to, apart from £1,000 for subsidence."

There are two types of cover "Standard" & "Premier" ... i went with Premier (as this covers accidents at home) & added "Contents Away from Home"

"Contents Away From Home Cover
Cover for your belongings needn’t end at your garden gate. With both policies we can insure your possessions against theft and damage if you take them outside home, for holidays, car journeys, shopping or nights out. We cover all your belongings worldwide so you don't need to worry about deciding which possessions to cover."

I had long conversations with them about being covered when night fishing & other "what if" (ie .. in left unnatended, in a car, garage etc) scenarios & they insisted everything is covered with the same "no limit" when away from home.

For me, they seemed well ahead of anyone else i rang & to top it off they were the most competitive priced & there is no interest charged for spreading the payments over the year.

I took my policy out couple of months ago & have since rung them on 4 occasions to confirm that my fishing tackle is actually covered (cos i'm paranoid :( .... & each time the answers have been consistent & most even took the time to check with underwriters (Aviva) before answering.
I phoned them again last week & asked the following questions & got the following answers

Q : Can you give me a categorical Yes or No .. Are sporting goods covered whilst "in use" away from the home ??
A : So long as not motorised (ie a boat) then all sporting goods are covered away from home

Q : If i were to snap my fishing rod during a cast ... Am i covered ??
A : If you have "contents away from home" .. then yes ... This is no different if someone was to damage/nicked set of golf clubs

Q : Can i have this in writing ??
A : You already have ... its in your policy wording

"Contents Away From Home"
You can buy this optional cover with either a Premier or Standard Contents policy. It provides cover for loss or damage to all of your possessions on a worldwide basis when they are temporarily away from your home. Please note with this cover your possessions are not covered for accidental loss or damage whilst they are at your home unless you have chosen a Premier Contents policy"

The only exception that seem to be listed was that watercraft items would not be offered ie ... boats, surfboards etc

The underwriter is Aviva.

I'de welcome anyone who can find a serious fault with this ... as i said i'm no expert & last thing i want is to be uninsured when it comes to claiming.

Like i say previously .... these really do seem head & shoulders above the others i phoned so if anyone has a renewal coming up & especially wants cover "away from home" for most things then may be worth a call

Hope this helps someone :hello:

It sounds good. Do you mind me asking what monthly premium they are charging you for all this?
