Ottoman Beds & Gas Struts

I'm hoping someone out there can help me with this. I'm trying to assemble a Hygena Montague ottoman bed (single). Was doing great until I reached the bit where I have to attach "metal clips" to each end of the gas struts to keep them in place. I think they're called retaining clips. According to the (vague) instructions they should just push on with the handle of a screwdriver. Well, I've tried everything I can think of and there's no way they will go on.
Have reached the end of my tether last night as I managed to take a chunk out of my thumb in the process and now have 2 stitches.
Is there a special tool to help put these clips on or is there anything else I could use instead? I was thinking maybe strong wire that I could wrap round and then twist tie with pliers (trying not to injure myself of course).
I'm sorry if this is not the right place to raise such a query but I've searched and searched on the internet to no avail. Thanks.
