Never had a puncture driving along country roads, I've had several shortly after a visit to the local tip/recycling centre.0

To be fair, that sounds to me like they panicked and hit the kerb at a funny angle.
People do some really silly things when they see emergency services vehicles, some pull over in locations where they can't pass, some slow right down until they find somewhere and some even try to stop them "queue jumping".
Best thing to do is always maintain a decent speed and pull over as soon as your in a location that will allow them to pass.
On the other hand I swear someone is driving about in a van, with a mate throwing nails out the back.
Stay away from the kerb as much as possible (this is a collection point for debris).“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
