I hope no one minds me making this point and I know this thread is meant (for the most part) in a light-hearted manner. My comment isn't just about this thread but I see similar points been raised on many threads and just want to put another point of view across.
I appreciate that spelling and grammar are important and I do understand that some people are very hot on grammar and I applaud them for it I really do but there are many reasons that people have poor grammar and spelling. It's not always that they are lazy, don't care or that they are stupid.
Speaking for myself I have dyslexia, which means that amongst other things, I frequently swap letters around when writing, so I might write 'diary' instead of 'dairy', but the real problem is when I proofread my brain automatically changes the letters to the way it wants them to be regardless of what is on the page. Also no matter how hard I try I can't learn to spell 'definitely' (seriously I just copied this from another post - I struggle to spell it so much the spell check can't even correct it for me!).
I'm not saying that no one should ever make a comment about someone's spelling or grammar, it's a free world and all. I just want to say that what seems easy/obvious to one person can be completely baffling to someone else.
Right off my soapbox (for now), as you were....0 -
I was about to have an apoplexy about your 'been' instead of 'being' but I have folded it up and put it back in the drawer awaiting use on a more deserving cause!

Damn I knew I should have taken it out :rotfl: Honestly 'been' and 'being' are my two worst words. I have been (think that's right!) known to search entire essays using the find function and remove every single 'been' and 'being' unless I am 100% sure it's the correct one. Even if it means rewriting entire paragraphs.
I'm not sure whether it annoys me more that I can't use them correctly or annoys people like yourself more that I an incapable of doing so?!0 -

Well no - you see - it absolutely couldn't annoy me in your case because you have a condition (is it a disability? I don't know? My niece is severely dyslexic and she insists it's a disability!) - anyway - you have a thing :rotfl::rotfl:so you're not doing it because you're too idle or too stupid to do it correctly. That's the difference! And don't pressurise yourself - that'll never help!I'm not sure whether it annoys me more that I can't use them correctly or annoys people like yourself more that I an incapable of doing so?!

Rant of the day for today is the entry form from this thread.
Entry form
Quite a few beefs about this one! :rotfl:
1. Entries, not entrees.
2. Why is there an apostrophe in "entree's"?
3.
So what is the point of having a question which asks:Entrants are automatically signed up for the Live Chic Newsletter to qualify.
???Sign up for the Live Chic Newsletter to qualify your entry? Yes/No
[/rant]Thanks to all who post constructively.

"I was sat / stood...."
Oh yes, who sat / stood you there?Worse things will have happened in the world today..."The only thing that really matters, it to love and to be loved."0 -
It is a matter of eternal personal shame that I didn't actually notice anything wrong with your original title

Just for the sake of clarity, my title is not wrong. There are two different proposed titles, and both have slightly different meanings:
1. Pedant's Corner - a corner for one pedant.
2. Pedants' Corner - a corner for a collection of pedants.
Not sure what the collective noun for pedants is - any suggestions? :rotfl:Thanks to all who post constructively.

My pet peeve is being forced to use 'Miss' or 'Mrs' as a title because a 'Ms' option hasn't been included. I was particularly amused/annoyed when one of the options was 'Master' and 'Ms' still hadn't been included!!
My peeve of the day today is from this competition from blinkbox where one of the correct answers is given as Guy Pierce. If films are the nature of your business, you could at least check that you've got the name of a major film star correct!!
As for a collective noun for pedants, I'd suggest either a precision or a fuss!!0
