Mobility Car Carers Help Question

I was looking into the possibility of getting a mobility car but the thing is, i have different carers all the time so i was wondering how i would go about it?

is it possible to get a insurance that covers them all that is more flexible? because putting only one carer on the insurance means i won't be able to use the car as much as i would like as i get different carers all the time.

    From the Motability website:

I have a number of carers, can they all drive the car?

It may be possible to accommodate those with many different carers, who may change regularly. You will need to contact RSA Motability to ask about an Open Policy which allows multiple drivers on the insurance. RSAM may require documentary evidence or copies of driving licences. All drivers must meet the Scheme’s insurance eligibility criteria through the life of the policy.

The Motability all-inclusive leasing package includes two drivers, with a third able to be added at an additional cost. If you would like to add or change drivers, please contact RSA Motability .To accommodate those with many different carers who may change regularly, it may be possible to have multiple drivers on the insurance (an Open Policy). However do read the following, from the Disability News Service, as it is possible (note possible - not definite) that with an 'Open' insurance policy, a tracking device MAY (not will) be fitted to the car to prevent possible misuse of the vehicle (The vehicle is for your use and benefit, not the carers use/benefit). If a tracker is going to be fitted, it will be discussed with you in advance.

In some circumstances this may be agreed, for further details please contact RSA Motability Customer Services Department on Freephone number 0500 373737. In certain circumstances documentary evidence or copies of driving licences may be required.

Cheers. Not sure I understand all that.. but it seems possible?

If it's not possible, would I need to ring up the RSA mobility to change the person on the insurance every time I go out with a different carer? or is it more complicated to do?

Assuming you're on high rate mobility and cannot drive yourself then it's either add a 'reliable' carer who you know can drive you wherever you need to go regularly or save the ~£200pm and use taxis instead. I can't see Motability (or RSA) allowing you to change nominated drivers on a monthly basis, much less a weekly basis.

I agree I don't think you'd be able to change nominated drivers regularly, but it does look as if it MAY be possible to have an 'any driver' policy. The OP needs to ask, and while I agree that it's worth considering whether taxis would be a better / cheaper option it's possible that £200 pm wouldn't cover the journeys regularly made.

Note that 'any driver' doesn't actually mean 'any driver'. There are likely to be restrictions of age and length of holding a full driving licence. The licence will have to be if not clean then nearly clean. At work we have a van and anyone over 25 who's held a full licence for at least a year (maybe two) can drive as long as they have no more than three points on their licence.

OP, you may have to send a copy of each carer's driving licence to the insurer, and even if you don't I'd recommend that you insist on seeing the original paper copy of each carer's licence, with their photocard (to check it really is their licence).

Just spotted this and offer my apologies Sue, I was thanking you for agreeing with my viewpoint but realise that it actually looked like I was sniping. Sorry about that. :(
  • Do keep us updated on what you find out, I would be interested to hear the outcomes as it may be something I have to look into in the near future.

No worries, I thought it looked a bit odd at the time but I never take offence unless I absolutely have to! :rotfl:
