Jsa housing advice

Hi I just wanted to get some advice for my mum. My mum has let my 19 yr old bro live with her as he failed uni. He's now looking for a full time job and claiming jsa. When she informed the council they told her jsa no longer covers council tax and so my mum has to pay a 50 pound increase per month because my bro lives there? I thought if you got jsa you didn't pay council tax? My mum works full Time

Once upon a time your Mother could claim Second Adult Rebate and get 25% reduction in her Council Tax if she had an unemployed adult son living with her.
But the glorious coalition Government decided to 'localise' Council Tax Support. They scrapped Council Tax Benefit and each Local Authority made up its own local benefit scheme.
There were a few conditions. Pensions would still get the same benefit and so would 'vulnerable' residents. The Government also reduced the subsidy from 100% to 80% so most, but not all, passed this cuts to these on benefit.
Second Adult Rebate was scrapped by some local authorities (except where a pensioner had a non dep living with them) and about 80% of Local Authorities charged unemployed up to 35% of the Council Tax where before they got full help.
So basically your Mother's Council Tax increases because your brother lives with her. She loses her 25% discount, Child Benefit and Child Tax Credits.
Check with your Local Authority to see if they scrapped Second Adult Rebate. These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.0 -
