reasons for a direct debit refusal?

Hi, sorry if this is a kind of general question.
I have deferred re-payments on my student loans, for now. One of the loans has been sold to a third party, Thesis Servicing. However, until now, the original owner of the debt, Student Loans Company, have dealt with all correspondence, including the applications to defer repayment, which I completed 3 months ago (this lasts a year).
So imagine my surprise when the company, Thesis (who have all my bank account details for when I do pay the money back) contact me to say that I have an overdue payment. They say they have started taking payments from the middle of this month (July) and I 'missed' a payment and owe them £18 odd.
So I contact the original debt owner (Student Loans Company) to ask them to verify that the status of the loan was deferred, but they refused to help, stating that as of a few weeks ago, they no longer deal with ANY admin of the old loans.
So, I guess my question is, COULD the reason that the payment hasn't been honored is because they weren't entitled to take it in the first place? i.e. they KNOW it is deferred, but thought they would chance their arm and get me to enter into a new Direct Debit with them? There was enough money in the account to cover the Direct Debit 10 times over, at anytime over the time they said they tried to take it (plus or minus 10 days). I can't call them until they re-open again in the morning, but would like to hear if anyone has experience of a loan being sold on then the new owner of the debt playing games like this?
thanks!

So from future you'll defer with Thesis?
Do you have any loans with Erudio?
I thought SLC dealt with deferment for Thesis loans? and if they are split with Erudio for them too.
It is all a huge mess.
To be honest I think the sale of the loans is illegal as to comply with the CCA the loans should not be marketed to minors (ie. Sixth form students) with a view to a financial gain.0
