Travelling Europe - vendor fees imposed on card transactions?

Hi there,
I have been looking into the best way to spend money abroad via this website. It seemed like the Halifax Clarity Credit Card was a very good option. I have now ordered it and it is in the post.
However, I was speaking to a friend who has recently travelled Europe who seems to think that a vast number of shops, bars and other vendors impose their own transaction fees on purchases if you choose to use a card, thus eliminating any savings. They prefer you to use cash.
Does anyone have any experience of this?
I am travelling to:
- Munich
- Nuremberg
- Prague
- Vienna
- Bratislava
- Budapest
Thanks for your help!

If you come across such a situation head to the nearest ATM, withdraw the cash and pay for the goods / services with the cash.0

Yes agreed, and thanks for your reply.
But I was more looking for comment on how common an occurrence this sort of thing is? Is it worth me even taking the card, or would I be better off taking all cash?0
