Vista upgrade/failed Microsoft update

Hi, just upgraded to Vista& did all avail Microsoft updates.Sec update for NET.Framework version 1.1 serv pack1(KB929729)failed,code643.Searched around & read bits about this&the conflict with update for this Version2, so uninstalled V2 & tried again but no good.Have also got Runtime error(this applic has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way)when I log on, which I think might be linked.
I have spent just about all day trying to sort this out & have now emailed Microsoft tech support.
Anyone had similar problem(it seems from research that it is a common problem) & got it sorted????
Any help would be great as this is an important Security update.
