    Anyone with some helpful advise!??

i have. be sure to employ a proofreader for that website :)
  • There are quite a few blogs out there that seem to do very well with running mostly competitions, and you can set up a blog for free, pay £5-£20ish a year for a domain, spend £30 on a quality blog design, so it can be done pretty cheaply!

You come on asking for ADVICE and shoot people down for telling you to concentrate on your child.
You obviously haven't got a clue about advertising, the basics of running a business or how to generate interest in your website so god knows why you think it's a good idea to start one?

I didn't say a website would cost thousands. Yes, you can get one on the go for a couple of hundred quid but I know which I'd rather look at.
You've given the impression that the cost isn't important so why don't you spend some of the money on professional ADVICE instead of coming on here and being rude to people.

I actually run two businesses already with a turnover of £40,000, tone of which i started when i was unemployed with no business knowledge at all, so yes i do know a little about business, dont be so patronising. I was asking for advise about a business idea not being a mother!

I can't stand this for another second. For the love of mercy it's ADVICE. When you spell it ADVISE it becomes a VERB. When you are asking for opinions/counselling/recommendations/guidance it's ADVICE.
    Thank you

Good luck, whatever you decide to do. I don't think anyone was saying that you shouldn't do anything with your life. You say you run two businesses so clearly you're doing something. :p

What I will say, and to echo other posters, a 9 month old has different needs to a toddler. My little one is now 20 months and needs constant supervision as he's into everything. Plus, nap times etc have changed etc so you may have the time now but in a few months that may not be the case.

By all means start the website, but don't be disheartened if you find that you don't have the time to run it and put the time in in a few months/a years time.

Each or between the two ? Timeframe ? Monthly or PA. Whats the GP on that , cost of purchases and overheads? Whats's the profit margin.

I can say i run somethng with a turnover online, means jack squat. You are proposing a click to win site which will not bring you a decent ROI.

Stick to the blog as many have mentioned.

There are loads of legal requirements in running promotions, especially where they border on gambling.

I'm not a comper, so I don't know exactly what you're proposing, but you would do well to take professional advice.

Perhaps you can get a professional adviser to advise you? ;)

i really wanted to do multiple competitions like the winsomething one, where you just go on and click to win. Obviously starting with small £50 prizes. I know advertising is a way to get money in, but how on earth do you know what to charge?? also likewise for the companies who hopefully would get involved, so i charge them per prize to advertise? does anyone know how these existing sites do it?

Bauer Media who are the group behind winsomething/click to wins, are an international company with many Radio, TV and Magazine titles (80+ brands in the UK alone).
They can cross promote their own competition websites and market their offering to other companies giving them chance to run advertising campaigns across multiple platforms including clicktowins.

I think your chances of getting any of that business must be just about zero.

The data harvesting/lead generation end of the market is fairly well sown up with the likes of myoffers, getmeaticket etc.

You would almost certainly need a unique marketing attraction or some other advantage over what already exists to have a chance of making money anytime soon from a competition website.

This suggestion earlier in the thread is a sound one and allows you to dip your toes in the water/gain some experience without much risk.

One point about prizes, cash is the most popular so unless you are getting prizes at a discount (which allows a greater value to be offered for the same outlay) stick with cash.

Let's assume that's an annual turnover of 40k, and let's assume that you run at a gross margin of 10%, so gross profit around £4,000pa - you need two businesses to generate that?
Thanks to all who post constructively.

Having read your other posts from the last few years, why don't you start up a blog on your pet-sitting business? I'm sure there are plenty of stories to be told (albeit anonymously for the pets/owners concerned).

You can then link in prizes from pet food/product manufacturers, this will be simpler to run for a new-starter and give you an opportunity to dip your toe in the water.

btw - I'm taking the pet-sitting as on-going, as you mention your 2 businesses in this thread and in previous ones, although I'm not sure if you're still running it, bearing in mind that you have the little one at home now. If not, then tailor the blog around the other business, or parenting, or life in Portsmouth - something you know and people will be interested to read about.

Although matters on here may be put bluntly, please do take on board the advice you are being given. Sit back and read/consider what the posters have said. Start from what you know, rather than suggesting you can run a start-up business going head-to-head against companies like Bauer, whose pre-tax profits are in the multi-millions.
