Problem with Santander 123 account direct debits

My wife and I have a couple of Santander 123 accounts, but we were running out of direct debits to pay from the accounts, to meet the rule of having two direct debits for each account.

To get round this problem, I opened a Tesco internet saver account, which allows you to set up direct debits, and everything seemed to be set up OK, with two payments for nominal amounts set up to pay out from the Santander account on the same date each month.

I noticed that I was not being charged the £2 monthly fee, or receiving any interest on the Santander account and when I contacted them about it, I was told that the two DD payments are being treated as only one, so I don't meet the requirement to have any interest paid on the account.

Tesco advised me that their account uses a master mandate number, which can't be changed, and I think it is this that is causing the two DD mandates to appear from Santander's side as only one.

I have changed the payment date on one of the DD's to see if that makes any difference, but neither Santander or Tesco seem to know if it would.

I would appreciate any advice on if it is possible to have two DD's going into my Tesco account, but they are not considered as one.

Thanks,

Tom

You need another Tesco account. Open an Instant Access Savings Account and set up a DD on that one too.

Then cancel one of the DDs on the Internet Saver account.

    You should be OK then.

OK, thanks. I thought the account I had was the only one that allowed direct debits, so I will look into the other accounts that Tesco have.

An alternative would be to set up a DD to give £2 a month or similar to a charity? Less paperwork/hassle, can be cancelled whenever you want, and the money will be going to a good cause...

Santander does not need the DDs to be paid monthly. You could have an annual donation to a charity, or set up a PayPal account, funded by DD from Santander. Use it at least once a year to keep it active.

Thanks for all the advice. I went on to my Tesco account last night and opened up a second account. I had it set up within a few minutes to pay a direct debit form the Santander 123 account, so hopefully this will sort it out.

    Thanks,

    Tom

I know this is an old thread but please could anyone who linked up their Paypal account to the Santander 123 tell if it should show in the DD section and if so how long does it take?

I've had mine linked to one of my 123 accounts since March 2013. It is confirmed (where PP deposit 2 x a few pence & you have to confirm the amounts). It shows as a DD on the 123 account but no date or amount for the latest payment.

I can't remember how long it took to show on the 123 account but don't recall there were any problems.

This is what I do with my Santander 123 account. Make sure that it is a direct debit (and not a standing order) which you set up with the charity, however (although it probably won't be a problem as most major charities will set up new regular donations as direct debits as standard now).

I haven't done it with Santander, but PayPal DDs can take a couple of weeks to show up
