Named driver accident

Options
Say someone was a named driver on their partner's car insurance policy but that named driver had an accident in their own car, with a separate policy in their own name.

Say that said persons had been in the process of moving house and hadn't yet notified their partner's insurer that the named driver on the policy had had an accident 6 months previous in their own vehicle.

Would this be an issue for the insurer if they were now to be told about it? What would likely happen?

You'd need to check the policy, somethings are supposed to be said to the insurer "immediately", other things only need to be said at renewal.

Generally you arent going to have too much problem as long as the policy hasnt renewed in the 6 month delay. Only really would cause a problem if the ND had already made a number of other claims/ accidents and this extra one pushed them over the underwriting limit for your insurer.
  • Would the insurer likely want to backdate any possible increase in premium due to the named driver having an accident in their own vehicle?

Would it be an issue if you were to inform the insurer of the accident, while at the same time requesting to change the vehicle covered on the policy? e.g. you bought a new car.

Ring them, only way to find out.

"Hi, I was checking my documents, you don't have XYZ accident on the policy documents.."

If they are required to be informed immediately then yes the premium would be backdated.

Doing multiple changes at the same time is unlikely to cause additional problems.

I mentioned an accident that my partner had in her car (we're both covered on each other's policies (separate albeit with the same insurer by chance)) a few weeks after I'd had it renewed, just didn't think about it on renewal as it wasn't her fault and were waiting for the other party to admit it. She's (about 18 months later) finally had the other party admit liability (he drove through a give way junction without stopping and hit the side of her car, 100% his fault). Spoke to the team, they just put up the cost by about 30 quid (still cheaper than if she wasn't insured on mine) - should go back down on renewal as it's a non-fault

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
