I think the 45degree ruling will help you here as mentioned, talk to the planning team. If you want to stay on good terms with the neighbours maybe state you have no objections to the application if amendments are made for your son's window.

Nothing wrong with terraces but I paid for a semi! Plus in a terrace my son's window would have been on the back wall, not the side. Maybe the neighbours will pay to move it (it would be better on the other wall!) and double glaze it while they are at it ;)

Ask them they may agree. It will probably work out cheaper for them rather than them having to change the plans. and then they get what they want and you are also happy.
  • OK. bit of blue sky thinking but would there be any way of relocating any of your windows in our rooms to let in natural light be it in walls or addition of roof lights or Dorma Windows through the ceiling? If so maybe see if your neighbours would pay for it.... Win-Win situation then. They get their extension without objection and you get to keep your natural light. Obviously you'd need to put in a planning application too if required but they might be happy to get their architect to do that too. Obviously it'll cost them a bit but I suppose it depends how important the full 2 stories are to them....

Edit,, Oops see that was sort of suggested already !!

There's also the 50:50 rule on reducing natural light.

But IMHO it's the so-called 'terracing' effect that will most concern planning.
