Hi all... I am extending my lawn and would like some tips on the best seed to go for plus growing tips ... also, as I am splashing out on a lawn, I am looking to get a new lawn mower as my mothers seems to have "gone to a better place"!! Nothing too expensive... electric... with a collection bucket....
Any ideas on either would be smashing!:T

Bosch rotak is a good lightweight mower I use one regular At a friends house,it's super. They sell for around £100. but you can get them cheaper if you search round.

Before planting a lawn, consider the following:
What is the lawn going to be used for?
    1. Immaculate stripe effect, labour intensive?

2.Tidy lawn that will survive rain/drought/moderate usage? Not labour intensive.

    3. Heavy usage e.g kids football ground, energetic dogs?

    What type of growing conditions?
Is your soil heavy with clay, so will become water-logged? Or is it on poor soil, perhaps bordered by evergreens (which strip nutrients from the soil for yards around them)? Is the area in full sunshine or shaded?

E.g. If you plant a fine-leaved delicate grass for the kids football ground, on sandy soil which you will not deeply invest with feeding and manicuring, you will end up with a horrible bare patch.

I recommend you read up on someone like Alan Titchmarsh - he has various sections on getting lawns started and kept - in his books, esp. for beginners. The more time you put in now to get it right, the more heartache and money you will save yourself in the long term.

Hi all... thanks a million - I am going to go for a bosch!!As for the lawn - just a tidy lawn that will survive!! Soil is great - anything and everything grows really well... majority is in the full sun all day.. little bit of shade but not much.. Also, I need to raise the area I am going to plant the seeds on (to match the exsisting level) by around 4inches - what would be best to use to do this?? Just soil or compost - what is best for the grass??Thanks again to all....

A "luxury" seed. Nothing hardwearing or for damp/shade etc. They'll say on the packet.
